7 Ways to Keep Your Dog Cool During a UK Heatwave ☀️🐾

Summer’s finally arrived and while we humans might be reaching for the sun cream and ice lollies, our dogs aren’t quite so thrilled with the heat. Dogs can’t sweat like we do, so staying cool takes a bit more effort and a lot more panting.
If you’re wondering how to help your dog stay safe and comfortable during a heatwave, here are 7 easy, dog-friendly ideas straight from our team here at Doggy Desserts HQ.
1. Freeze Some Doggy Ice Cream 🍦
Yes, really! Dogs love an icy treat as much as we do. You can make your own in minutes using ingredients like banana, xylitol-free peanut butter, lactose-free Greek yoghurt, and dog-safe fruits like blueberries or apple. Pop them in silicone moulds and freeze for a few hours.

Need a recipe? We’ve shared a super simple one here:
2. Offer a Shady Spot in the Garden 🌳
A nice bit of shade can make all the difference. Whether it’s a parasol, a pop-up gazebo, or a tree in the garden, giving your dog the option to cool off in the shade is essential. If you’re out and about, a clip-on umbrella or blanket draped over a crate works wonders.
Bonus points for setting them up on a cool tiled floor or shaded patch of grass!
3. Get the Paddling Pool Out 💦

A shallow paddling pool is a brilliant way for dogs to splash about and cool off. Even just dipping their paws in can help lower their body temperature. Just make sure it’s in the shade and the water isn’t too cold straight from the tap.
And if you don’t have a paddling pool, a washing-up bowl or storage tub can do the trick for small breeds.
4. Switch Up Walk Times 🐾
Avoid the midday sun completely. The safest time to walk your dog is early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler. Shorten walks and take it slow — this isn’t the time for a hike or a game of fetch in the park.

5. Keep Those Paws Safe 🛑
Hot pavement can burn your dog’s paws quickly. Here’s the 5-second rule: if you can’t hold your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog to walk on.
Stick to grass, shaded areas, or invest in some dog booties if you’re heading out.
6. Add Extra Water Stations 🥤
Place water bowls in every room your dog might visit, plus the garden. You can even drop a few ice cubes in the bowl to keep it cooler for longer (or just for fun — many dogs love to chase them around!). Low-sodium chicken broth ice cubes are a fun way to boost hydration too.

7. Know the Signs of Heatstroke 🚨
Heatstroke is a real risk and can happen quickly. Here are some things to watch out for:
Excessive panting or drooling
Lethargy or disorientation
Red gums or glazed eyes
Vomiting or collapse
If you’re at all worried, don’t wait call your vet immediately.
